How to Measure Kitchen Cabinet Linear Feet

  1. 1
    Sketch the kitchen footprint

Draw each wall with dimensions. Mark appliance locations (refrigerator, range, dishwasher) and window/door openings. A simple floor plan prevents double-counting corners.

  2. 2
    Measure each wall run

Measure from corner to corner along each wall where cabinets will go. Write down the total length (e.g., north wall = 12', east wall = 8', south wall = 10').

  3. 3
Subtract appliance openings from base cabinet run

Subtract refrigerator (typically 36"), range/cooktop (30" or 36"), and dishwasher (24") from the wall lengths where they sit. This gives you base cabinet LF on each wall.

  4. 4
Subtract hood/vent from wall cabinet run

Wall cabinets stop at the range hood, which is typically 30"–36" wide and 24"–30" from the ceiling. Subtract this opening from the wall above the range.

  5. 5
    Add corners and islands

Add ~1 LF per inside corner for corner cabinet units. Measure island base cabinet depth separately and add as "island LF."

Kitchen Layout Planning Rules

Work Triangle

The three key work zones — sink, range, refrigerator — should form a triangle with each leg between 4 and 9 feet. Total triangle perimeter should be 13–26 feet. Linear feet of cabinets often bracket these three points.

Counter Run

Measure the length of each wall run where base cabinets will be installed. Include corners (each inside corner adds ~1 LF for a blind corner or lazy Susan unit). Exclude appliance openings (refrigerator, dishwasher, range) from linear feet — but count walls on both sides of the opening.

Appliance Gaps

Standard refrigerator opening: 36" wide. Range opening: 30" or 36". Dishwasher: 24". Subtract these widths from the wall run to get cabinetry LF on that wall. Example: 12′ wall with 36″ fridge = 12 − 3 = 9 LF of base cabinets.

Island Separate

Island cabinets are measured and quoted separately from perimeter (wall-run) cabinets. An island 4′ × 2′ has 4 LF of base cabinet depth on each long side — quote at 4 LF, not 12 LF of perimeter.

Upper vs. Base Match

Wall cabinet LF usually equals base cabinet LF on the same wall, minus the hood/vent space above the range (typically 30"–36" no upper cabinet). Budget: wall cabinets cost 20–30% less than base per LF because they hold less volume.
