How to Calculate Total Cost from Price Per Linear Foot
The calculation is straightforward — but waste factor and installation costs are often missed in first estimates.
With Waste = Linear Feet × (1 + Waste %) × Price per LF
Total Budget = Material Cost + Installation + Tax + Delivery
Calculate the total linear feet of material needed using the formula LF = Area ÷ Width, or use the coverage calculator on the hub.
Add 5–10% for trim and molding; 10–20% for flooring patterns; 20–25% for hardwood lumber. Order rounded up to the nearest box or bundle.
Multiply total LF (with waste) by $/LF. Add installation (typically 50–150% of material cost for labor) and sales tax.

| Category | Material | Material Only | Installed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flooring | Hardwood flooring (solid oak, maple) | $3–$12/LF | $8–$25/LF | Width-dependent; 3¼″ is cheapest per LF |
| Flooring | Laminate flooring | $1–$5/LF | $3–$8/LF | AC rating matters; AC3+ for high-traffic areas |
| Flooring | Vinyl plank (LVP) | $2–$7/LF | $3–$9/LF | Waterproof; thickness (4mm–8mm) affects price |
| Trim / Molding | Baseboard (finger-jointed pine) | $0.50–$1.50/LF | $2–$4/LF | Painted finish hides finger joints |
| Trim / Molding | Crown molding (wood) | $1–$6/LF | $5–$12/LF | Wider profiles and hardwood grades cost more |
| Fencing | Chain-link fencing | $5–$15/LF | $8–$25/LF | Height and gauge drive price |
| Fencing | Wood privacy fence (cedar) | $10–$30/LF | $15–$45/LF | Cedar resists rot; pine is 20–30% cheaper |
| Countertops | Laminate countertop | $15–$40/LF | $25–$60/LF | Post-form edge included; custom edges extra |
